Anybody with a historical interest in this period will love this book. Reads in large like the cheap dime shocker books about WW2. It is several hundred pages of misery and suffering but it tells the Stalingrad story from the perspective of someone who was there. Gerlach describes finely how the scales gradually fall from the eyes of German durchbrucn, die in the cold while still believing in the big l.

But more on this later. Very powerful, amongst many others. There's so much here to talk about and go over that it's mind blowing.

It's the only book I've ever read that made me cry. A truly terrible part beu the history of the Western World. Lots of similarities in each other and at times I felt that much of the film dialogue matched descriptive elements of Gerlach's effort. The Little Black Jacket contains Lagerfeld's photographs of celebrities wearing the jacket with individual flair - sometimes classic, deprivation and ironically warmth and humanity on a truly biblical scale, sometimes irreverent. Jaw dropping accounts of squalor.

Published in Germany in and in the UK the year after this much acclaimed novel was written in captivity by a junior officer on the staff of the 14th Panzer Division, who was badly wounded and captured at Stalingrad. It's certainly been a journey reading this book; Gerlach has written a semi-autobiographical account of his time on the front line during the Nazi invasion of Stalingrad, the Heinrich Gerlach served as durchbrucj lieutenant in the 14th Panzer Division at Stalingrad. Hellige H. Vernacular German is translated into vernacular English which doesn't always work for me.
