The director of the movie most likely added the scene to give the viewers an insight into what was happening between Nick and Gatsby. It took me a bit to get into it, but after the first couple chapters I fell in love with it. I myself have read the book and have always been so intrigued with the character of Gatsby, I couldn't wait, be all favorite piece of literature. This book is my end all.
